In some film productions there are creative producers who oversee all the creative aspects of a production. I don’t know if there is anything similar in Theatre. Good at administrators with artistic/creative souls are important. Being a creator and administrator is a tough road.
For sure— there are creative producers and artistic directors of institutions that oversee the process for sure. And a lot of them are some of the most amazing, passionate, intelligent people working in the industry.
It’s especially true of off-Broadway theaters in NYC and major regional theaters around the US, and also the case for off-west end theaters in the UK. A position like that doesn’t really exist for Broadway because programming works differently; that’s more about real estate and rentals and butts in seats.
